"12 Years a Slave" actress Storm Reid joins Oprah Winfrey in Disney's adaptation of the novel "A Wrinkle in Time." She is expected to play the leading role Meg Murry.
According to Variety, Reid will play the oldest daughter among the children. She joins the previously cast Oprah Winfrey (Mrs. Which), Reese Witherspoon (Mrs. Whatsit), and Mindy Kaling (Mrs. Who). They made their involvement official on Twitter. Winfrey even got into her character as the stuttering Mrs. Which.
"A Wrinkle in Time" is the first book in Madeleine L'Engle's beloved children "Time Quintet" book series. The book series included "A Wind in the Door," "Many Waters," "A Swiftly Tilting Planet," and "An Acceptable Time." The story follows children as they travel through time and visit strange worlds to be able to find their missing scientist father.
In the plot of "A Wrinkle in Time," Reid's character Meg is a young girl who struggles in school but excels in math and physics subjects, as Entertainment Weekly reported. She will be seeking out her missing father with her brother Charles Wallace and her classmate Calvin O'Keefe. They will encounter various celestial creatures such as the three Mrs. W's and the enigmatic Aunt Beast.
Reid made her film debut just a few years ago in "12 Years a Slave." She has since gone on to book a role in the made for TV movie "American Girl: Lea to the Rescue." She also participated in the Sundance sci-fi hit "Sleight" which opens next April nationwide. She is represented by Stella Alex from the Savage Agency, Principato-Young Entertainment, and Felker Toczek.
The production of "A Wrinkle in Time" is set to begin later this year. Ava DuVernay is directing the film. "Frozen" screenwriter Jennifer Lee is penning the adaptation for Disney. The Murry family is notably a mixed-race family. Reports suggest that the project is also looking for a non-white actor to play Calvin with red hair.
