Over the past few weeks, Japan Box Office had been dominated by anime movies. "Your Name (Kimi no Na wa)" nabbed the number one spot while Kyoto Animation's "A Silent Voice" got the second rank.
On Sept. 17, Saturday, the anime "A Silent Voice" opened to over 120 screens and immediately earned a 283,000,000 yen ($2.8 million USD). The anime movie have already sell 200,000 tickets leading it to rank second in Japan's Box Office just over the weekend, Anime News Network reported.
Makoto Shinkai's anime film "Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) stayed in number one spot in its fourth week. Over the weekend, the anime sold 800,000 tickets earning about 1,076,000,000 yen ($10.6 million USD). And just after 24 days in theaters, the film sold 6.98 million tickets with a total earnings of 9.1 billion yen ($89 million USD).
Since its release, Shinkai's anime has been the top grossing movie in Japanese theaters and become the top earner of any domestically produced film this year. The film is still getting a lot of thrill from critics and audiences and might surpass the 10 billion-yen mark, which will make Shinkai part of a very exclusive group, Rocket News reported.
"A Silent Voice" is based on the Japanese manga series with the same title. The manga which was created by Yoshitaki Oma tells the story of a boy named Shoya Ishida. During his elementary years, Shoya led a class to bully a deaf girl named Shoko Nishimiya. Hunted by his past, Shoya decided to make amends with Shoko and rekindle their friendship.
Oima's series was originally released as a standalone issue in the February 2011 issue of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. However, in 2013 the series began a full serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine and ended its run in November 2014.
