Philadelphia 76ers rookie Ben Simmons broke his foot during practice, and now he must undergo surgery. The highly popular young player will have to miss several months of the game following the incident.
The news broke out on Friday when Simmons landed on his teammate's foot during a scrimmage, and broke his right foot. According to ESPN, one source said that doctors believed he suffered an acute injury and not a stress reaction. The incident occurred during the Sixers' Training Camp at Stockton University, New Jersey on Friday, Sept. 30.
Simmons injury will sideline him for at least three months, and the Sixers president Bryan Colangelo said he would not rush him back to court because this type of injury requires attention.
"I feel very badly for Ben to be in a situation to start his career this way," Colangelo said. "But this is an injury that he should come back from and have a very successful and long career."
Meanwhile, latest update from the NBA suggested that Simmons suffered a fracture on his fifth metatarsal bone of the right foot. His X-ray and MRI were reviewed by a team of doctors that includes Sixers Head Physician Dr. Christopher Dodson, Sixers Chief Medical Officer. Along with the Sixers doctors, also attending the Co-Chief of Sports Medicine Orthopedics at New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center Dr. Jonathan Glashow.
Simmons is a player which 76ers fans have a very high hope to bring the team to the elite level. His jersey becomes one of the Top-10 sales on the NBA merchandise. After the 76ers drafted him on June 23 this year, fans started to purchase his jerseys at a rapid rate, and he even haven't played a single game in the NBA.
The 6'10" forward was selected as first overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. He is well-known as a strong player in defense and offense. During his one year college basketball in LSU, Simmons averaged 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and also 11.8 block per game.
