The New York Comic Con showed a lot of interesting things that give us a reason to geek out of our minds. What's worth noting though is that director Jay Oliva had a panel for the upcoming animated film "Justice League Dark" and explained what it is all about.
According to Screen Crush, "Justice League Dark" is another animated feature film in the whole lineup of DC animated films that stars DC "unconventional" heroes that include John Constantine, Zatanna, Jason Blood (otherwise known by his alter ego the demon Etrigan) and Deadman. "Unconventional," since they're mostly heroes who possess the arcane arts, both dark and, well, "non-dark."
Since fans of the "Constantine" TV series were disappointed that the show was short-lived, they would be delighted to hear that the actor, Matt Ryan, will be returning to voice the chain smoking titular anti-hero in the animated film. The actor actually expressed his difficulty in trying to pronounce the spells as an exorcist with actual dialogue coaches hired to help him. This was actually very handy especially when trying to pull off a genuine spellcasting chant for the movie.
Other heroes include Deadman, a former flying trapeze artist who lost his life before and is now a floating invisible spirit that has the ability to possess any living creature; Zatanna, stage magician on the outside and a powerful wizard on the inside; and Jason Blood, a cursed and immortal man who can transform into the powerful demon Etrigan.
Video clips of the upcoming movie were shown in NYCC, showing other heroes such as John Stewart (the other Green Lantern) and Hawkman. Batman will be joining in with this dark and magical branch of Justice League. It will be actually interesting on how he will combat enemies of the same caliber as Constantine and the rest of the gang. It will also be interesting on how Batman and Constantine will interact with another, given the dark and gritty personality of the Dark Knight and the cynical, wise-cracking attitude of the exorcist.
In an article from IGN, director Jay Oliva also revealed that during the development of the movie, he was actually inspired by titles such as "Final Fantasy," "Full Metal Alchemist" and "Harry Potter." It was actually more of the "magic" mechanics from those franchises that he based his movie on, like the transformation symbols from "Full Metal Alchemist."
"Justice League Dark" is set for release sometime early 2017.
