Technology is getting better and better as time goes by. Smartphones and laptops will have a quicker Wi-Fi that will become available starting next year.

The Wi-Fi Alliance starts to commission routers, laptops, smartphones, and other devices that carry an extremely fast Wi-Fi standard known as WiGig. It almost double Wi-Fi's present top speed and will be applied to 'marquee' laptops and smartphones.

WiGig has limits and is accessible within a short range of roughly 33 feet which is about 10 meters. Although there's a router, a laptop or a smartphone supporting it, it is more likely that it would only be the speed that one can get inside the room where the router is located, The Verge reported.

"We talk about it as an in-room technology," says Kevin Robinson, who is VP of marketing at the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Granted that the WiGig has its restrictions, it still digs out many capabilities including Virtual Reality. If a gamer, for example, wants to use a VR headset with a PC or game console, tethering is required with cables since existing wireless standards are not quick enough.

WiGig is compelled to be sufficiently fast in order to support Virtual Reality. The Wi-Fi Alliance as well implies its high speeds will be functional for 4K video, augmented reality (great for Pokemon Go), and for streaming smartphones and laptop displays to desktop monitors.

Internet providers could also take advantage of WiGig which depends on the same millimeter wave frequencies which Alphabet's Access, formerly known as Google Fiber, along with Starry which is Aereo's internet startup. Both seek into delivering high-speed internet connection even in streets without any required cables. Robinson also points out WiGig could be utilized in sports stadiums as well as in large venues.

Wi-Fi Alliance is a global network of companies that brings Wi-Fi. The company' Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ac is the most recent generation of Wi-Fi delivering up to a gigabit per second data rates. This allows devices to manage demanding applications including 4K video, Ultra HD, and fast file transfer on handsets and gaming devices to name a few.

WiGig is not new and in fact, has been used for the past few years and is already in some major products. Amid Wi-Fi's announcement of the certification program, WiGig deployment definitely will have a good start.
