"The Leftovers" star Justin Theroux joins "Ant-Man" actor Paul Rudd and "The Legend of Tarzan" actor Alexander Skarsgard in Duncan Jones' sci-fi thriller "Mute" for Netflix. "Warcraft" director Jones is being helmed for the dystopian future.

Theroux will play in an undisclosed role for Netflix's "Mute." According to Variety, Skarsgard is playing a mute bartender Leo Beiler. His character Beiler will be looking for a woman he loved who has suddenly disappeared.

In the plot of "Mute," Beiler has lost his loved one and searches deep into the city's underbelly. Upon his relentless search for his woman, the recurring clues point to an odd pair of American surgeons, one of whom is Rudd.

"Mute" is set in Berlin, 40 years in the future in an immigrant-filled city, where East crashes against West, Entertainment Weekly reported. It is based on a script co-written by Jones and Mike Johnson. It will be produced by Stuart Fenegan under Jones and Fenegan's Liberty Films banner.

Jones said last November that he had been working on getting "Mute" made for 12 years. He is optimistic about what will be produced. He is aiming for the film to last unlike any other science fiction movies being made today.

Rudd and Skarsgard came on to the "Mute" project late last year. In addition, Theroux can be seen currently in "The Girl on the Train" with Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett, and Rebecca Ferguson, grossing over $44 million worldwide in its opening weekend. He stars in HBO's Peabody Award-winning series "The Leftovers," which is currently in production on its Season 3 to be aired in 2017.

Theroux also co-wrote "Zoolander 2" (2016) and "Tropic Thunder" (2008) with Ben Stiller and scripted "Iron Man 2" (2010) for Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios. He is represented by CAA and Lighthouse Management.

Netflix announced in September that it would handle the distribution for "Mute."
