"Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp joins the "Harry Potter" spinoff cast in J.K. Rowling's sequel "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2." He had better start picking out a patronus.
Depp is expected to play Gellert Grindelwald in the "Fantastic Beasts" sequel. He also recently made a cameo briefly in the first installment "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," bowed last Nov. 18 and starred Eddie Redmayne with David Yates directing, Variety reported.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Redmayne played as magizoologist Newt Scamander in the Warner Bros.' magical franchise "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." He is making his way to the Magical Congress of the United States of America in the 1920s when his magical beasts escape from his expanding briefcase.
Yates is also directing the "Fantastic Beasts" sequel from a script written by Rowling with David Heyman producing. He hinted at the fan event that it will take place in another global capital city, not the New York City setting. He assured that it will be very different.
Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, and Jon Voight also star in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." There has been no any announcement yet if any of them will be joining the sequel. Surprisingly, Rowling announced that she has finished the plot for five films in the franchise.
The world of witchcraft and wizardry of "Fantastic Beasts" sequel seems like a perfect fit for Depp who is known for such fantastical cinematic roles as Edward Scissorhands and Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's franchise like the upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," opening on May 26, 2017.
Depp is also on board Fox's remake of "Murder on the Orient Express" with Josh Gad's playing his assistant and translator. The remake will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and releases on Nov. 17, 2017.
The "Fantastic Beasts" sequel will begin shooting next year and will be released on Nov. 16, 2018. Released dates for the third, fourth, and fifth films have not yet been set.
