"Maleficient" star Elle Fanning takes the lead role in Awesomeness Films' adaptation of Teresa Toten's novel "Beware That Girl." She is said to be in the vein of "Gone Girl" and "The Girl On The Train."

Fanning will play Kate O'Brien in "Beware That Girl." Her character is a scholarship student who survives by lying her way into friendships with wealthy classmates. Olivia is the 'it' girl of the Upper East Side with a dark and mysterious past, Deadline reported.

"Beware That Girl" is set against the backdrop of an elite Manhattan private school where two girls befriend, use, and manipulate each other in a game of cat and mouse. When a charming and handsome new faculty member joins their school, the girls are forced to bring their secrets to light.

"Beware That Girl" is the psychological thriller based on the YA book by Toten. It will be produced by Brian Robbins, Matt Kaplan, Brian Duffield, and Nicki Cortese. Other Toten's work includes the Blondes series, "The Game," and "The Unlikely Hero Of Room 13B," for which Kirkus named it one of their best teen books of 2015.

To those who are not aware, Fanning is the lithe blond 18-year-old younger sister of Dakota Fanning. She has played a nymph-like vampire model in "The Neon Demon" and a princess in "Maleficient." According to The Hollywood Reporter, she was lovingly nicknamed a 'unicorn' by her stylist Samantha McMillen.

Fanning just recently appeared featuring alongside her makeup artist Erin Ayanian in THR's 2016 Beauty Issue. She will next be seen in Mike Mills' upcoming "20th Century Women" which gets its Oscar-qualifying over the Christmas holiday as well as in Ben Affleck's "Live by Night."

Fanning also has a number of starring roles coming up including Reed Morano's sci-fi film "I Think We're Alone Now," opposite Peter Dinklage, Sofia Copppla's "The Beguiled," and John Cameron Mitchell's "How To Talk To Girls At Parties." She is represented by WME and Echo Lake Entertainment.
