"How I Met Your Mother" is getting a new spinoff. The new project in development titled "How I Met Your Father" will be penned by the executive producers from hit NBC drama "This Is Us."
According to Deadline, "How I Met Your Father" is "an ensemble show that tells the story from a female point of view," with a brand new take on the original premise. New characters will also be introduced as the group of friends who helps the central character navigate life before meeting the father. "This Is Us" co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are attached to pen the script.
In 2014, CBS ordered a pilot for "How I Met Your Dad" starring Greta Gerwig just as the original series was about to conclude its nine-season run. However, the project didn't make it to air after CBS decided to drop it.
Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, the original creators of "How I Met Your Mother," are also involved with the new project. But with new characters involved, the report said that the offshoot will not necessarily air on CBS. Other networks like ABC, FOX or even Netflix can acquire the rights to the show. No date has been set for the beginning of production as well as the premiere.
Aptaker and Berger's writing credits include multiple episodes on NBC's breakout TV series, "This Is Us." The duo also penned scripts for other network comedies such as "The Neighbors," "Grandfathered," "Friends With Benefits" and "About A Boy."
The mothership series, which stars Josh Radnor as the hopeless romantic Ted, became an all-time hit for CBS. The show's fanbase grew bigger each year, attracting a huge following in social media. Original cast members include Jason Segel as Marshall, Cobie Smulders as Robin, Neil Patrick Harris as Barney, Alsyon Hannigan as Lily. Cristin Millioti joined the series in the later part in the big role as The Mother.
