Sam Esmail has a new project in the works. The "Mr. Robot" creator has signed up to develop a new sci-fi TV series based on the classic 1920's film, "Metropolis."

In a report from The Hollywood Reporter, it was announced that Esmail is currently in talks with Universal Cable Productions to develop a mini series based on the German silent film, "Metropolis." Set in the year 2026, the small screen adaptation "will take place in a future society where wealthy industrialists rule the vast city from high-rise tower complexes, while a lower class of underground-dwelling workers toil constantly to operate the machines that provide its power. Risking everything they know, two star-crossed lovers from opposite sides of the divide must find a way to bring down the whole system," the site revealed.

The small screen adaptation of "Metropolis" is being eyed to be released in two to three years. This will give Esmail enough time to focus solely on his critically acclaimed series, "Mr. Robot." The hacker drama is only mapped out to run for four-five seasons.

Esmail is still negotiating his exact role on "Metropolis," but it's likely that he will also take on the showrunner and director role just like what he's currently doing with "Mr. Robot."

Aside from the futuristic vibe of "Metropolis," it was also reported that the studios involved have set a big budget for the project. Each episode will cost $10million dollars, giving Esmail a wide range of options to create the series using his imaginative vision.

The original "Metropolis" was released in 1927 and is recognized as one of the most celebrated silent films of all time. According to Collider, the Fritz Lang-directed film was one of the most expensive movies ever made because of its "epic scope" and "groundbreaking visual effects."

The start of production and cast information of "Metropolis" the TV series are expected to be announced on a later date. It's also yet to be determined as to which network will acquire the rights to release the mini series.
