The San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich became coach who won most game with one team in the history of NBA. He booked his 1,128th winning game on Saturday, Feb. 4 to surpass former Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan.

Popovich who has been the head coach of Spurs since 1996 set the mark in his 11th year on Saturday night in 121-97 victory over Denver Nuggets, USA Today reported. Previously, he tied the record with Sloan in 102-86 win against Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday.

The 68-year old coach is known for his methodical approach to the game. He always required a good fundamental basketball skill from his players and organize the play in a very fluid motion. Popovich is one of the coach who introduce small ball movement in the court, which he learned from his mentor Larry Brown.

His new record put him as one of the most respected coach in the NBA. After the game against the Nuggets, Popovich praised Sloan for his tenacity to build Utah Jazz as the powerhouse team in the Western Conference, according to Bleacher Report. He said that he tried to do the way Sloan built the Jazz as an organization.

“We tried to do it similarly to them as far as how we conducted the program,” Popovich said. He added the things which he learned from Sloan are, “What we expected, how to do it, how to keep it to yourself, and that sort of thing."

Popovich is a coach with five NBA championships and he is able to build the superb system which require no superstar players. His long lasting tenure with the Spurs for 21 years have been a testament of how successful he is in building the team with has passed two generations of players, from David Robinson to Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard.
