Japanese pop star Mayu Tomita has regained consciousness on Wednesday, June 8, after a vicious attack by a male stalker. Tomita has been in critical condition after being stabbed over 20 times by suspect Tomohiro Iwazaki. The 20-year-old star has regained consciousness after two weeks of being unconscious.

The police are set to continue with the investigation once they get approval from her doctors. They are currently waiting for her condition to stabilize.

The suspect identified as Tomohiro Iwazaki had reportedly stalked Mayu through her social media months before the attack. Tomita subsequently relayed her fears to the police after receiving several disturbing posts from Iwazaki online.

Sources say that while the star was severely injured due in the attack and sustained a deep wound on her neck, her vital organs were not damaged.

The attack took place last month in Western Tokyo. Police were summoned to the scene where they found a folding knife covered with blood. It is unclear why the stabbing took place, but sources have revealed that the fan was apparently upset because Tomita returned a present he gave her. No reason was given on why the gift was returned.

Iwazaki has since confessed to the attack, saying he was very furious about the way the Japanese star treated him. He added that he would not forget the way she treated him with condescension.

Tomita is a pop star and actress and she is also currently attending university. She is working to be able to finish her studies.

Fans took to Twitter to support the actress, with many expressing the hope that she recovers while condemning the attack.
