The first trailer for Tom Cruise's new action movie has been released.

Paramount on Wednesday released a 2-minute clip of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, a sequel to the hit 2012 film based on Lee Child's bestselling novels.

The trailer opens with Reacher about to be arrested by two officers on a diner when he drops a couple of threatening lines.

"Two things are going to happen in the next 90 seconds," he warns the duo. "First, that phone is going to ring. Second, you're gonna be wearing these cuffs on your way to prison."

The cops mocked his "prophecy" until they later realized what they were just up against.

Never Go Back is adapted from Child's 18th book in the Jack Reacher series. The story follows Reacher's return to the headquarters of his old army unit in Virginia to meet an old friend, Major Susan Turner. However, he learns that she has been missing and has been charged with espionage. He also finds himself on the run after being accused of a crime committed nearly two decades ago.

Back in 2013, the production for Never Go Back almost did not come to fruition when its predecessor, Jack Reacher, did not hit the $250 million mark at the box office after its 2012 release. But when earnings reached more than $250 million worldwide, Paramount decided to greenlight the second installment of the franchise.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is directed by Edward Zwick. He co-wrote the script with Richard Wenk and Marshall Herskovitz. The movie is produced by lead star Tom Cruise and Don Granger.

Supporting cast members include Cobie Smulders, Aldis Hodge, and Danika Yarosh.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back will open in theatres on Oct. 21. Watch the trailer below:
