Independence Day: Resurgence performed well in the international market, raking in $102.1 million in ticket sales in 21,872 screens from all over 57 markets about a week after its release.
The distributor of the film, 20th Century Fox, has reported successful results from markets across Asia and Latin America. The success has attributed to the movie's remarkable performance in several countries. However, China leads the way with $37.3 million, according to Yahoo! This is the fourth highest weekend opening of a 20th Century Fox film in China.
China is followed by South Korea where the movie earned $7.4 million, with the United Kingdom close on its heels at $7.3 million in ticket sales.
The movie was well received in Asian markets, including Taiwan with ticket sales of $3.7 million. Part of the reason why Independence Day: Resurgence did well especially in China is said to be because parts of the movie was shot in the country. The movie also features popular Chinese actress Angelababy.
Independence Day: Resurgence also had a very successful opening in India, generating around $3.5 million in ticket sales. This is the biggest ever opening day sales for a 20th Century Fox film in India.
Independence Day: Resurgence beat Deadpool in IMAX opening day sales in international markets; raking in $10.8 million compared to the $8.1 million generated by Deadpool on its opening day.
The success of Independence Day: Resurgence in international markets will come as a relief to the giant distributor company as the movie did not perform well in the U.S. The movie opened with a dismal $41.6 million in North America. This was unexpected given the hype surrounding the film.
