Syfy has granted "12 Monkeys" another season.
The cable network has officially renewed the time-travel thriller "12 Monkeys" for a third season, Deadline reported. The new season will contain 10 episodes and will premiere in 2017.
"This season of 12 Monkeys has proven to be a breakthrough," the Chief Content Officer of NBC Universal Cable Entertainment and President of Universal Cable Productions Jeff Wachtel said in a statement.
"From its epic storytelling to its grand aesthetic, Terry and the cast and crew have invested boundless energy and passion, and it showed."
Based on Bruce Willis' 1995 film, "12 Monkeys" follows time-traveler named Cole who is sent back from a dark future to prevent a disaster from happening. Cole, with the help of Dr. Raily, must defeat an old malevolent group called the Army of the 12 Monkeys. As he and Dr. Rally chases the truth, he will learn that there are deadly consequences for tampering with history and time.
In "12 Monkeys" Season 2, the series delved on the plague storyline while also explored the real motivations of the Army; however, that plot is about to change as the series progresses. According to showrunner Terry Matalas, "12 Monkeys" Season 3 will be "even more twisty and emotional chapter," although the cable network is still keeping the production details and casting additions under wraps.
Its most recent outing killed-off the character of Future Jennifer, a shocking revelation discussed by showrunner Matalas in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The showrunner explained that the last scene with Jennifer and Jennifer is heavy, because it was where the past choices and mistakes in life were talked about.
"12 Monkeys," which hails from executive producers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, stars Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, Barbara Sukowa, Emily Hampshire, Kirk Acevedo, Noah Bean and Tom Noonan.
"12 Monkeys" Season 2 finale episode is slated to air on July 18.
