Premier League squad Tottenham Hotspur is rumored to be "ready to pounce" on midfielder Danny Drinkwater, as the progress of his current contract negotiations with reigning English top flight champions Leicester City is slowing down.

Caught Offside reported that the Spurs are currently deliberating on a possible £20 million offer for Drinkwater "ahead of the new Premier League season," as the 26-year-old England international had impressed Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino last term.

The report also noted that the 5-foot-10 Manchester native "was a key figure in (Leicester City manager) Claudio Ranieri's success last year, playing a pivotal role in the Foxes midfield to guide them to a title."

However, contract extension negotiations between Drinkwater and the Foxes have appeared to be stalling at the moment, which had led to the rumors that Pochettino and company are ready to "make their move" on the midfielder while he is still available, The Sun reported.

Another unnamed Premier League side is said to be also interested in Drinkwater, but it is Tottenham who is reportedly in front of the line if ever the Englishman will really go on to exit the King Power Stadium this summer.

The Spurs are in "close watch" with regards to the development of Drinkwater's talks with Leicester and they are surprised that the reigning champions have not tied him down in the long term. Tottenham is also curious about the lack of movement between the two concerned parties with the new season already starting in less than two weeks.

The Foxes said to have just recently offered the Englishman a new £80,000 per week compensation package, rather than giving it outright after the team won the title last May, which is something that may not be enough for Drinkwater at this stage of his career.

Leicester reportedly thinks that it would be sufficient to make Drinkwater stay to their side, but many of his suitors are capable of offering more than that.

Drinkwater is entering his sixth season with the Foxes later this month if he decides to stay. He had appeared in a total of 175 games and had scored 13 times in five seasons with Leicester.
