What happens when talented, good-looking performers croon onstage with the most romantic of tunes, sans the outlandish costumes and fancy dance moves? The music wins. And wins hearts at that.
Wang Lee Hom proved just that when he performed before a packed crowd at Galaxy's 20th anniversary concert in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend.
The 38-year-old singer-songwriter wowed an audience of 20,000 at the Stadium Merdeka with his rendition of romantic hits such as "Forever Love","Wei Yi (The One and Only), "Love Love Love", and "Yi Shou Jian Dan De Ge" (A Simple Song).
Providing an effective counterpoint to the powerful performance was Lee Hom's understated garb. Dressed in white shirt and dark pants, a simplicity that is quite uncharacteristic of most Asian concerts, Lee Hom's musical prowess invariaby became the focal point of the Saturday night event.
Too, it drove home the message from the oft-stated phrase, "less is more." Lee Hom, who serves as Taiwan's World Vision Ambassador, is not known for squandering his money on clothes and the fancy trappings of life, prefering instead to donate 90 percent of his income to charity.
Ecstatic Homaniacs, members of Lee Hom's official fans club, sported yellow tees and waved blinking glowsticks as they sang along with their idol to crowd favorites such as "Ni Bu Zhi Dao De Shi" (All The Things You Never Knew) and "Lian Ai Tong Gao" (Love In Disguise).
Accompanying Lee Hom in his first Malaysian gig since getting hitched late last year was his lovely Japanese-Taiwanese wife Michiko Nishimura, or Lee Jing Lei. The two were married in November and had their first child --a daughter-- in July.
Besides his music, Lee Hom directed and played the lead role in the movie "Love in Disguise" opposite Chinese actress Crystal Liu. The movie is said to be a portrayal of his own quest for love and world fame.
The US-born star will next appear in the American action thriller "Blackhat".
