The grapevine is abuzz with word that American-born, Taiwan-based singer Wilber Pan may be dating Taiwanese actress-model Doris Lai.

What fed the rumor mill was an Instagram photo posted by Doris on Saturday, of a credit card bill of US$6,728.48 with the caption "thank you NY", which showed Wilber as the cardholder.

Doris subsequently deleted the photo after realizing that Wilber's name was on it, replacing it with one that had a heart stamped over his name, but not before it was seen by many.

The actress-model confirmed though that she really met Wilber in New York.

"We have a mutual friend who tied the knot in the United States, so we saw each other at the banquet," she explained, adding that they were in the company of 18 others at the pub. She said Wilber picked up the tab before they could chip in.

Doris stressed that she and Wilber are good friends, and that she is currently single.

Asked why she deleted the photos, the 30-year-old celebrity said she was just reluctant to answer questions concerning her relationship status. 

She added, "Wilber and I are friends for quite some time already. When he released his album, I even supported him at a variety show. If it is true that we were dating, do you believe that we will appear on the same show?"

Wilber's manager did not comment on the issue. The singer has returned to the U.S. after promoting his latest album Crown & Clown.

In the past, the singer was also linked to Bebe Yang, the heiress of a construction company. A photo that showed Bebe entering and leaving Wilber's apartment led to speculation that the two were having an affair.

Wilber had denied the rumors, explaining that he just lent his car to a friend.
