"Dota 2" will see the arrival of a new hero named Monkey King that will be launched as part of the New Jersey update this fall. The Monkey King was announced on the fifth day of The International 2016. The new hero was already teased in "Dota" version 6.79, which could be battled as an Easter egg boss but was not a fully playable hero in the original gameplay.
The Monkey King followed the reveal of the first "Dota 2" hero, Vrogros, the Underlord that was announced on the fourth day of The International 2016. The Underlord is the much-awaited Azgalor, the Pit Lord successor which has reportedly been in the works since 2012. The Pit Lord is a classic hero from the first "Dota" custom map in "WarCraft 3."
The "Dota 2's" Monkey King originated from Moba games as a popular concept that manifested in some form in "Heroes of Newerth," "League of Legends" and "Smite." Its character is derived from Sun Wukong, which is known from the 16th century Chinese novel "Journey to the West." The Monkey King's abilities and play styles have not been detailed yet, but a few inferences could be made from the "Dota 2" trailer.
Valve indicated it would push in this direction as the "Dota 2" roster of heroes matches the original game's size, Polygon reported. Furthermore, developers have considered bringing the Monkey King's character in the first "Dota," leaving hints to his existence in an Easter egg and a beta version.
"Dota 2" is an online battle arena game between two five-player teams. The teams are challenged to fight using a wide set of hero characters with unique abilities. Each hero has certain abilities and play styles that would match the player's tactics and suit particular situations.
The "Dota 2's" new hero arrived on Aug. 23 along with a post-game UI overhaul, PC Invasion reported. Watch the "Dota 2" Sun Wukong the Monkey King reveal here.
