The rumored Microsoft Surface phone could be a game changer on mobile devices. A leaked patent filed by the tech giant point out to an innovative fingerprint sensor.
Last June, Microsoft announced that it's finally dropping the Lumia division and will stop its production by mid-2016. With that, rumors suggest that a Microsoft Surface phone will replace Nokia's Lumia trademark.
Confirmation about the rumored Microsoft Surface phone hasn't made by the Redmond tech giant yet., but the leaked patent from WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) strongly suggests that an iOS and Android mobile devices' rival is about to come out.
The patent application called "Fingerprint Detection with Transparent Cover" is said to be a fingerprint sensor embedded in a glass. Thus, this would be the first fingerprint sensor on a mobile device that can be used by tapping on the screen instead of accessing it on a home button.
"The filter is configured to selectively allow the light scattered by the fingerprint ridge to pass through the filter. A detector generates a signal indicative of the scattered light allowed through the filter," the WIPO patent description reads, according to Beta News.
Express added, the fingerprint sensor works when the user presses on the screen as the sensor detects friction.
The first Microsoft Surface phone series is said to come in three variants from mid-range to a high-end version.
With that being said, there will be three options of 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and a whopping 8GB RAM and 512GB storage.
These three variants are expected to be a standalone PC capable when connected to a screen, keyboard and mouse via Microsoft's Display Dock. Also, it may feature a retina scanner which can access Microsoft Hello.
As for its release date, Microsoft Surface phone series are expected to make its official debut next year.
