"Boardwalk Empire" alum Michael Zegen joins the cast opposite "House of Cards" star Rachel Brosnahan in Amazon drama pilot "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." "Gilmore Girls" creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is directing it.
According to Deadline, Zegen will play Joel in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." He will soon-to-be the ex-husband of Miriam "Midge" Maisel (Brosnahan). He is self-assured, charming, loves to make people laugh and to be the center of attention. He has a good job working for his father's company.
However, the real dream of Zegen's character in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is to be a stand-up comedian. It is his dream but not his destiny. And once he figures that out, he decides that he cannot face his life or his wife. He leaves his family, but he never manages to completely untangle himself from Midge. In addition to Brosnahan, he joins the recently cast "Monk" actor Tony Shalhoub. Shalhoub will play an academic and intellectual Abe Weissman, who is the father of Midge.
"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is set in the 1950s, TV Line reported. It is about a young Jewish wife Midge, who had her life mapped out for herself: go to college, find a husband, have 2.5 kids, and throw the best Yom Kippur dinners in her elegant Manhattan apartment. Her life takes an unexpected turn. She has to decide quickly what else she is good at. She becomes a stand-up comic in a grungy club in the Village from an uptown housewife.
"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is one of the streaming video service's five recently ordered pilots. It is the hour-long potential series that Sherman-Palladino wrote. It is co-produced by Sherman-Palladino with her husband Dan Palladino.
