The Los Angeles Clippers have signed free agents Dorell Wright and Xavier Munford to training camp deals on Tuesday but both players are not expected to make the team's final 15-man roster for the upcoming NBA season.
ESPN reported that the Clippers have agreed to terms with both players early this week to be a part of the team's approaching training camp, but since they already have "15 players signed to fully guaranteed salaries for the 2016-17 season", the chance for both Wright and Munford "to make the opening-night regular-season roster" is slim.
The Orange County Register indicated that the signing of the two players is merely a "contingency plan" for the Clippers in case something unexpected and unfortunate happens during training camp.
The 30-year-old Wright had been in the NBA for 12 seasons. He was drafted by the Miami Heat as the 19th overall pick in the 2004 draft and had played for the South Florida squad during his first six years in the league.
He then signed with the Golden State Warriors in the summer of 2010, where he spent his most productive NBA season n 2010-2011 by averaging 16.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals in 38.4 minutes per game, before getting traded to the Philadelphia 76ers two years later.
Wright joined the Portland Trail Blazers in July of 2013 but was underutilized as he spent most of his time on the bench. His last season in the NBA was in 2014-2015 with the Blazers where he averaged 4.6 points, 2.3 boards, 0.9 dimes, and 0.3 assists in only 12.6 minutes of playing time a night.
He then joined Chinese Basketball Association club Beikong Fly Dragons after his NBA stint before signing with the Heat again last April.
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Munford is an undrafted player who joined the NBA in 2014. He ended playing for D-League side Bakersfield Jam, though, in his first two seasons in the league.
The former Rhode Island standout was signed to multiple 10-day contracts by the Memphis Grizzlies last season as the squad dealt with a lot of injuries at that time.
Last April, Munford and the Grizzlies reached a multi-year agreement, but he was released just two months after as Memphis declined the team option included in the contract for the 2016-2017 season.
