According to The Hollywood Reporter, China's censorship authorities have denied a release date to the 20th Century Fox movie. China reportedly happens to be the second largest movie market of the world after giving huge business to previously released Marvel movies.
It is said that in China there is no rating system. Movies are either released or banned. The movie that was rated "R" last week by the Motion Picture Association of America is not considered fit for screening in China by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television. The ban has been reportedly imposed due to movie's graphic content, violence, nudity and use of offensive language which moviemakers consider essential to its plot.
In the comic books, Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson, was introduced as a supervillain. Later, however, his role was transformed into an antihero. He was also known as "Merc with a mouth" because his is very chatty and can bring down the fourth wall.
It is said that Hollywood has often found a way create toned down versions of "R" rated movies for China but it may not be the case this time. A source close to the authorities' claim that changes to "Deadpool" can impact the plot of the movie.
Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool was first seen in the 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." After seven years, the Hollywood actor will reprise his role for a character's first ever stand-alone movie.
It is said that many observers believe that Deadpool will eventually find a way into the China market. In 2015, Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" made $240 million at its opening.
A Chinese publication MTime.com reported that microblogging certified as Chinese Film Co. movie marketing planning branch planning director posted a document that read Deadpool "not over the trial, Deadpool is dead" on Jan. 16.
