FOX just recently announced the timeslot for its upcoming musical drama series "Star". The network is slating the Empire creator Lee Daniels’ newest musical drama Star in an early premiere on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 9PM, following the fall finale of broadcast network's "Empire".
In a report by TV Line, the drama series is set in Atlanta which will follow the lives of three women, Ryan Destiny, Jude Demorest and Brittany O’Grady, who formed a musical group and experience the music business’ highs and lows on their road to fame. The series cast includes Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt and Nicholas Gonzalez.
Variety reported in August that the Lee Daniels, Fox bought the project, which is in early development, with a put pilot commitment, which is no surprise given Lee Daniels’ success in the genre at the network. Daniels have previously explored the possibility of a drama about everything from ‘Dreamgirls’ to modern-day girl groups that are manufactured, they are put together, they don’t have an organic reason to be together. That set-up would, for Daniels, would lend to a great soap operatic storytelling machine.
Producers of the show have also teased the possibility of crossover episodes between “Star” and “Empire”, although there are no plans that are set. “It is modern-day music music in Atlanta and ‘Empire’ is modern-day music business in New York,” FOX boss Dana Walden said. “It’s not inconceivable that the two shows can cross.”
