The first official trailer of "Silence" has been released by Paramount on Tuesday.
Helmed by prolific director Martin Scorsese, "Silence" follows two Jesuit priests (Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield) in 17th century Japan as they go on a mission to search for their mentor (Liam Neeson). The religious film is based on a 1966 novel penned by Shusaku Endo about a Portuguese Jesuit priest who was persecuted along with other Christians in Japan.
The two-minute trailer offers a glimpse into Father Rodrigues (Garfield) and Father Garrpe's (Driver) journey as they endure a series of torture and long days of sufferings that ultimately put their faith into test.
"I pray but I'm lost," whispered Rodrigues on the closing moments.
"Am I just praying to silence?"

The source material of "Silence" has influenced the film's director, Scorsese, on a deep personal level. The award-winning director shared with reporters last year about his passion on this project, telling them that Shusaku Endo's work became a part of his life since he was very young.
"I was very much involved in religion, I was raised in a strong Catholic family," Scorsese said.
"Further reflection is how [we] want to lead our life in the Christian faith ... so ultimately this book drew my attention when it was given to me in 1988."
The official poster of "Silence" was also released this week, with Liam Neeson's character featured front and center.
"Silence" also stars Tadanobu Asano and Ciaran Hinds. It opens in theaters on Dec. 23.
