"Emerald City," a new series based on the classic tale of "Wizard of Oz," will arrive this January on NBC. On Thursday, the network has dropped the first official trailer of the fantasy series.

Viewers who are big fans of "Game of Thrones" must keep an eye out for "Emerald City." The new, modern version of this classic tale follows Dorothy (Adria Arjona), a young woman who after getting swept up into the eye of a tornado is transported to the world of Oz. There, she meets an all-powerful Wizard (Vincent D'Onofrio) who governs over one kingdom, has outlawed magic, and faces not only the wrath of a growing cauldron of witches but a looming disaster brought on by a mythical force.

On the trailer released via Facebook, viewers are introduced to Dorothy and her trained K-9 police dog, Toto. Together, they are whisked away to the magical land of Oz where mythical creatures and witches rule. The story kicks off with a familiar death of a wicked witch that will trigger a not so good response from her evil sisters.

The clip also introduces viewers to the Scarecrow (Oliver-Jackson Cohen), a character who seems to establish a romantic connection with Dorothy. Then there's the Wizard, who asked Dorothy about her purpose in life.

"Ask yourself why you were brought to Oz," he says.

"Are you just a girl from Kansas, or are you more?"

In addition to the trailer, the network also unveiled two posters of "Emerald City."

The fantasy and magical elements of "Emerald City" are two things that give the show that "Game of Thrones" vibe. However, viewers who appreciate the latter's dark storytelling that is rife with violence and explicit sex scenes might not be able to appreciate the upcoming series on the same level.

"Emerald City" premieres on Friday, Jan. 6 at 9PM on NBC.
