Holiday weekend box office is up to be a bountiful one. On Wednesday, a crowded slate of wide releases dropped into theaters.
Days before the holiday weekend, Disney's first Polynesian princess "Moana" already earned a record of $15.6 million USD during its first day of screening at 3,875 locations, Entertainment Weekly reported. Following its mid-week gross, Disney has set its own bar even higher, since their film "Frozen" previously held the record with $15.1 million in 2013.
The animated Disney film is projected to reach between $68-72 million USD throughout its screening time. However, netizens are warned to not be surprised if the film pushes higher.
"Moana" is a story about a teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her Journey, Moana meets the demigod Maui, who later guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder.
The film is directed by Ron Clements an John Musker, co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. According to Quartz, "Moana" features music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'I and Mark Mancina.
Meanwhile, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter spin-off "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" merit an exceptional good reviews from movie critics over the weekend. Also, the film grossed a magnificent $74.4 million USD during its first three days in wide release.
Also, it has pulled a strong mid-week numbers with $11 million USD on the day of "Moana's" release. An estimated range of $36-42 million USD is projected into its sophomore frame.
