Russell Westbrook has passed LeBron James to make 45 triple-double in his career. He is now on track to average triple double in a season, to parallel Oscar Robertson records.
Westbrook’s 44th triple double was made during the 106-88 victory against Detroit Pistons on Saturday Nov. 26 as reported by ESPN with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 15 assists. That was his sixth seventh triple-double this season and his fourth in the past six games.
Afterward he made another triple double to lead the Thunder defeated New York Knicks this Monday with 27 points, 18 rebounds and 14 assists. Based on the statistics, he is now averaging 31.2 points, 10.1 rebounds and 11.2 assists this season.
He will become the second player in the NBA history who ever recorded a triple double in the season after Oscar Robertson if he maintains his game according to SB Nation. The Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan also agreed that Westbrook is able to book a records.
"He could do it," Donovan said. "He has a great impact on rebounding the basketball, and he can score. So, there’s certainly a possibility that can happen.”
Robertson’s record to average triple double in the full season was made in 1961-62 season with 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 11.4 assists. Jason Kidd came close to match the records in 2006-07 13 points, 9.2 assists and 8.2 rebounds, but there is no other player who was able to post double digit on points, rebounds and assists. Westbrook is on track to tie the records.
Westbrook amazing play has helped his team to achieve 11-8 records this season. He also helped his teammate to better themselves with his assists. However, in the fast-pace game of the NBA, keeping a consistent play to average triple double is a definite challenge.
