Players of the Chapecoense were among 81 people on board the flight that crashed into mountains in northwestern Colombia, in which officials said just six people were thought to have survived, including three of the players. Chapecoense had risen from obscurity to make it to the Copa Sudamericana finals scheduled for Wednesday against Atletico Nacional of Colombia.

Chapecoense football team goes down in tragic airplane crash outside Medellin on its way to Copa Sudamericana 2016 final. Lionel Messi and the Argentina football team was on the same aircraft just a few weeks ago.

The Brazilian club was on aircraft Lamia BAE-146 when an electrical malfunction caused it to crash just outside the airport in Colombia Monday, The Sun reported. According to the latest reports, only six of the 77 passengers survived the horrible crash.

Among the survivors from the team includes Defender Alan Ruschel, Defender Helio Zemper, and reserve goalkeeper Jackson Follman. Goalkeeper Marcos Padilha, who is more popularly known as Danilo, was rescued from the crash site, but was later announced dead in the hospital.

Lionel Messi and the Argentina team was on the same plane a few weeks ago on the way to Brazil for the World Cup qualifier match. Also, 21 journalists were on the plane with the Brazilian club when it crashed.

The Copa Sudamericana Final is considered the biggest match in the history of the Brazilian football club, BBC reported. They were slated to play against Atletico Nacional of Columbia. The team honored the fallen players by conceding the game to declare the Chapecoense the champions.

The team even tweeted, asking their fans to wear white during the game.

Before boarding the plane, manager Cadu Gaucho said in a video posted on social media that the trip is considered the team's most important event. Playing in the Copa Sudamericana is considered to be a fairy tail story for the team, who comes from a small city in Santa Catarina with only 200,000 residents.

Even though the team was founded back in 1973, it has entered Brazil's Serie A only in 2014. However, they are now in the ninth place, ahead of bigger teams like Sau Paolo, Cruzeiro, and Fluminense. It is unfortunate that last week it made it to the Copa Sudamericanana Final, making it the first Brazilian team since three years that made it to that level.

It is considered the second biggest game in South America, after the Chapecoense football team defeated San Lorenzo of Argentina.

Alvadir Pelisser, one of the club's founder, said the tragedy ended everyone's dream.
