Showtime series "Masters of Sex" has ended its run. The cable network has opted not to renew the show starring Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen after four seasons of airing.

In a report from Deadline, Showtime confirmed that "Masters of Sex" Season 4 marked as the show's final run. The announcement comes after the show aired its Season 4 finale last month, which saw Virginia and Bill getting married.

"Masters of Sex was a beautifully written and acted exploration of America's changing sexual mores," Showtime said in a statement.

"We are incredibly proud to have shared the story of Masters and Johnson for four critically-acclaimed seasons. The series will remain available across our platforms where new viewers can discover it for years to come."

"Masters of Sex" has been a modest performer on the cable network's Sunday night timeslot, averaging a total of 2.1 million viewers during its final run.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the move not to push through with Season 5 was a decision made by Showtime, the showrunners and the cast. According to the three parties, they have already told the story of Virginia and Bill as real-life pioneers of human sexuality in full-circle.

Over its four-year run, "Masters of Sex" has earned multiple Emmy nominations. Actress Allison Janney, who guest starred as an unfulfilled housewife, won the award for guest actress in a drama series category.

"Masters of Sex" is based on Thomas Maier's biography of the same name and was adapted for television by Michelle Ashford. Co-starring are Annaleigh Ashford and Caitlin Fitzgerald.
