A new "X-Men" film is reportedly underway and will start production in 2017. 20th Century Fox has reportedly set up new production offices in Montreal, Canada.
Fox in cooperation with MELS Studios reportedly intends to start the set construction as early as January next year to start filming in May, Le Journal De Montreal, reported. MELS president Michel Trudel confirmed the project but did not specifically say that the set construction will be for an "X-Men" film.
"They will start shooting in May and they will occupy Studios 2 and 3 of MELS for several months. We had two and a half months of negotiations with the people at Fox... We are very pleased that they have agreed to return to Montreal. They enjoyed their two previous shooting experience with us and they were very satisfied with our facilities and talent of the Quebec film industry," Trudel said.
"X-Men" films writer and producer Simon Kinberg has been tight lipped about future "X-Men" projects except for "Logan" and "Deadpool 2." However, he did say that after the two, he will start writing the "next of the mainline X-Men movies," Cinema Blend reported. This suggests that the next installment will likely be set in the 90s with Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy playing the central characters. Fox reportedly wants to re-sign the trio and perform a reset on its superhero franchise.
Pending confirmation that the next "X-Men" ensemble film will continue from "Apocalypse," a "New Mutants" film might actually be mystery film after the conclusion of the Bryan Singer trilogy. If this is the case, Kinberg has already promised that it will be loyal to the comic book material with an appearances of earlier "X-Men" characters such as Professor X and Alexandra Shipp's Storm.
For now, the confirmed mutant films under Fox are "Logan" which opens on March 3, 2017 and "Deadpool 2" which opens on January 12, 2018. Watch the full interview with Kinberg below:
