"Suicide Squad" star Margot Robbie returns as Harley Quinn for the all-female DC villains movie "Gotham City Sirens." She and director David Ayer are reteaming to reprise her role.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie will also executive produce "Gotham City Sirens." Her character Harley Quinn is the part-time girlfriend of the Joker (Jared Leto) and is currently DC's most popular female character.
"Gotham City Sirens" is a feature project that will showcase the top female villains from the DC stable. It is based on a recent comic series "Sirens" launched from DC in 2009. It focuses on the popular villainesses from Batman's rogue gallery such as Quinn, Batman's sometime love interest Catwoman, and Poison Ivy, who uses plants and their toxins to get what she wants, Variety reported.
Geneva Robertson-Dworet is writing the screenplay of "Gotham City Sirens." She is a top female writer in the action sphere who also has penned scripts for the "Tomb Raider" remake and Warner Bro.'s own "Sherlock Holmes 3."
Ayer directed Warner Bros.' all-bad guy comic book movie "Suicide Squad" and is back in the business of DC comic villains to direct and produce "Gotham City Sirens." He most recently helmed the Netflix action-fantasy pic "Bright" with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton.
The heads of DC's film arm, Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, will also be involved in a productional role for "Gotham City Sirens." The studio is still developing a "Suicide Squad" sequel as well as looking into a spinoff featuring the assassin Deadshot (Will Smith).
"Suicide Squad" was a touch production and underwent some reshoots. It was a solid box office hit, grossing $745 million worldwide. It is now the 13th highest-grossing superhero release of all time domestically and has surpassed the international box office of "Deadpool," starring Ryan Reynolds.
"Gotham City Sirens" has not yet been given a release date from the Warner Bros. studio. However, it is now on the fast track. The planning is for Robbie to film her Tonya Harding pic "I, Tonya" in the first quarter of 2017 and follow that up with this film next summer.
