A lot of A-list celebrities are part of massive movie universes and big franchises. Oftentimes, the offer is simply too tempting to pass up on, that's why many were curious as to why Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey turned down a chance to be part of the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" cast. For McConaughey, however, the answer is really simple.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is already expected to become one of 2017's most hotly-anticipated blockbusters. Before everything the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" cast was finalized, Marvel and director James Gunn tapped McConaughey to play the villain in the sequel, a role which remains to this day a closely-guarded secret. The role of the villain will be brought to life by actress Pom Klementieff.
The 47-year-old actor turned down the role for a very justifiable reason. He opted, instead, to star in the movie adaptation of Stephen King's novel "The Dark Tower" instead of be part of the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" cast.
"I like Guardians of the Galaxy, but what I saw was 'It's successful, and now we've got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor,'" McConaughey told Playboy. "The Dark Tower script was well written, I like the director and his take on it." According to McCoanughey, "The Dark Tower" is a "fantastic thriller that takes place in another realm, an alternate universe, but it's very much grounded."
Does this mean, however, that the award-winning actor is closing his doors to superhero universes? Not quite. The actor revealed that he's open to taking part in a Marvel or a DC movie as long as the part is right.
Speaking to Variety, McConaughey said he wants to play a character he would want to portray over and over again in different movies-given the nature of superhero universes. He shared that he has to consider the story and the character when committing to movie roles.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" hits theaters April 25.
