Saturn's 10th moon was seen in mid-December of 2015 and is making some buzz in the science world on Jan. 7. It is considered a huge breakthrough in the industry of space science since this is the first time that scientists found a natural moon in the solar system since the artificial ones were made.
In an article published by Science News, the 10th moon of Saturn was found in 3 pictures that were shot sometime around December. Scientists couldn't help but be fascinated on Saturn's rings that are seen from earth surfacing edge-on.
Dr. Audouin Dollfus of the Observatory of Physical Astronomy in Meudon, France, relayed this news to the public ad it has sparked the interest of many astrophysicists and space lovers. Saturn is a unique planet since it has at least 62 moons as currently recorded. These moons are diverse in nature according to the Cassini spacecraft.
Janus was the official name of Saturn's 10th satellite and it happened in 1983. It was also the first moon that was discovered in Saturn in the 20th century. Another interesting information about it is that it revolves in the same orbit with Epimetheus, which is another moon that was discovered after Janus' appearance. Scientists didn't know that the two were different elements in the sky until 1978.
Thanks to the Cassini spacecraft, this discovery was made possible since it started orbiting the planet in 2004, according to Wikipedia. The spacecraft's mission is bound to end on September of this year. It is the fourth spacecraft that paid a visit in the planet Saturn and is also the first to experience its orbit.
With the help of this special spacecraft, life on Saturn and all the possible activities found in there was monitored. Ledger-enquirer also confirmed the existence of this 10th moon of Saturn. Scientists are still looking forward to making a breakthrough, as to what could they possibly find in the said planet.
