The people who consumed the highest amount of red meat over a period of 26 years had 58 percent greater chance of being affected by this condition.

The phrase that "your body is a temple" has been used for ages and yes, it makes much sense to a great extent. The people of the world are health conscious in one way or another but there are many chances where the people damage their health without actual knowledge of what they should be consuming. Red meat is a constant staple in most of the diets all over the world and it acts as the main source of protein but recent studies show that too much consumption of red meat can lead to an inflammatory bowel condition.

Red meat has prevailed as a major meat since ancient times and its consumption has grown over the past few years but this could be an alarming issue that an excessive or continuous consumption of this type of meat can cause major health issues without prior knowledge. According to news from Independent, researchers that analysed the basic information about the regular diets of nearly 46,000 men in the US found that 764 developed a condition called "diverticulitis". The people who consumed the highest amount of red meat over a period of 26 years had 58 percent greater chance of being affected by this condition.

There has not been much evidence that the sole cause for the inflammation is red meat but the scientists say that it could be as the result of bacteria which is present in the gut. It is observed that consumption of unprocessed red meat increases the chances of inflammatory bowel condition than the consumption of processed meat due to the effect of heat which kills many bacteria of the meat and alters some of its properties.

Statistics mentioned in Science Daily state that "Diverticulitis" is relatively common condition which accounts for more than 200,000 hospital admissions per year in the United States and result in an annual cost of $2 billion USD. Further research suggests that if a meal of red meat is replaced by fish or poultry once a day, it can reduce the probability of suffering from inflammatory bowel condition. It is further recommended that people use processed red meat at regular intervals instead of unprocessed meat consumption at all times.
