"Shameless" alum Jane Levy has said that she still feels conflicted about the turkey blaster scene in "Don't Breathe."
In an interview, she feels the scene had been glossed over and only a few people had a problem with it. However, she went to say that she understands how people could criticize the film for it, Cinema Blend reported.
"...I personally understand the criticism. I think that it's sort of a cheap shot. You know, there's a twist on rape or attempted rape, but rape in horror films is really actually common. It's not that shocking or exciting or new. And I think that criticism, I sort of agree with," she explains.
For the uninitiated, the scene involves the blind man (played by Stephen Lang) who tied up Jane Levy in his basement attempting to impregnate her with a turkey blaster. In the disturbing scene, Lang's character said that he wants to keep her chained in his basement until she gives birth to his child.
Levy plays the scene perfectly but some critics voiced out that the scene made them uncomfortable. Others pointed out that the prevalence of rape as a storytelling device has become a phenomenon calling it a "cheap tactic" to augment the scare in horror flicks.
However, she did say that the scene was not portrayed as an overt depiction of rape and defended it by saying that the film did not get too far over the edge.
"What I appreciate about the scene is that it's not explicit, and it's more of a psychological threat, but at the same time, it's still something that exists in storytelling all of the time. If you think about how much rape exists in movies, it's quite shocking. I've actually been wondering about that," she explains.
"Don't Breathe" is the second collaboration between director Fede Alvarez and Levy. Alvarez went to commend Levy for her work on the film despite requiring her to go that extra yard, Entertainment Weekly reported.
"That's a side note. But I think Jane did a fantastic job. I have a tremendous amount of respect for her work. I think she's brilliant in the film, and she never fakes a single emotion, she's really going for it, and she gave 100 percent every day on set."
