Jim Parsons has landed a new gig on Discovery Channel. "The Big Bang Theory" star is set to narrate an upcoming medical docuseries slated for release in May.

According to Deadline, Parsons will also serve as executive producer for the docuseries "First in Human: The Trials of Building 10" alongside Dyllan McGee (Teddy In His Own Words) and John Hoffman (The Alzheimer's Project), who also directed the project. Discovery will air the docuseries as a three-parter beginning on Thursday, May 18 at 9PM.

Parsons, who's known for playing the eccentric Sheldon Cooper on the hit CBS sitcom, is set to embark on a very different role on Discovery's upcoming docuseries. Set in the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C., "First in Human" will explore the lives of the doctors, researchers, and patients who together make progress possible in this cutting-edge testing ground.

According to the report, viewers of the docuseries will be given unprecedented access inside the largest hospital in the world where some of the riskiest medical research is done. This includes the development of modern chemotherapy treatments and the first treatments for HIV/AIDS.

"I know that everyone who watches First in Human will feel the same sense of pride I did when I discovered this incredible institution that our country created," said Parsons in a statement.

"I hope viewers will share the sense of gratitude and awe that I felt when learning about the human beings who bravely put their lives in the hands of some of our most innovative scientists and doctors as they search together for the medicines and cures that give all of us fuller, longer lives. This is truly the story of how we, as human beings, function: both at an elemental level and at our most profound."

Parsons recently starred on the blockbuster film, "Hidden Figures" opposite Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer. Per Entertainment Weekly, the historical film opened with a total of $22.8 million on its first weekend release in the US.
