Blackjacks are not over 2NE1's break up. Being the front runner of the girl group scene in K-Pop, many still find it hard to believe that the team that brought out hits such as "I Am The Best" are no longer together. Disbanding may have been a mutual decision among the members and YG Entertainment, but Yang Hyun Suk recently revealed on major factor that prompted the split.
In a recent tell-all, Yang Hyun Suk explained the reason behind 2NE1's sudden disbandment. There were many speculations that the group fell apart after Minzy's exit and because of their lack of activities. YG Entertainment's chief, however, revealed that they decided because of Park Bom's mental health issues.
"I wanted to protect 2NE1 when Minzy moved to another label but the reason why I decided on their disbandment was because I believed that Park Bom's mental health was not well," Yang Hyun Suk said, as quoted by allkpop. He explained that Park Bom's mental health deteriorated after she received immense criticism from her drug controversy in 2014.
Although Park Bom was suffering from stress and guilt, she still expressed her desire to promote with 2NE1. However, Yang Hyun Suk saw it fit to look after Park Bom's health first. "I advised Park Bom that 2NE1 is important, but I wanted her to put her mental and physical health first," Yang added.
2NE1's seven-year run officially concluded on Jan. 20, Friday, when they released their last song "Goodbye." According to Billboard, the ballad was written by CL and is accompanied by a music video which stars CL, Park Bom and Dara.
Despite the group's current situation, Yang Hyun Suk has not lost hope on 2NE1. He suggested that it's still possible for Park Bom, CL, Minzy and Dara to reunite in the future the same way veteran bands like S.E.S did.
