Nina Dobrev finally confirmed speculations that she appears in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8. The actress revealed her return in the season finale.
Dobrev confirmed her appearance in the last run of the vampire series on social media. She shared a photo of her manuscript for the series on her Instagram. The image revealed that Dobrev returns in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 episode 16, "I Was Feeling Epic." This is the finale episode of the series directed and written by showrunner Julie Plec.

However, it remains unknown whether Dobrev returns as Elena or Katherine. Speculations are rife that she comes back as Elena. It would make for a perfect reunion for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena, if the latter finally wakes up from her induced sleep.
This would not be the first time that Dobrev appeared in the show's finale. She also made a cameo in Season 7, when she voiced Elena. However, it remains unclear if she also returns in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 finale for a cameo appearance.
Dobrev's return to the show has already been established prior to the actress' confirmation. Plec has since hinted to her appearance in the series finale in previous interviews. She mentioned at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con that couples will have their happy-ever-after in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8, which of course, include Damon and Elena.
Likewise, Plec told TV Line that the "xXx: Return of Xander Cage" actress already promised to return to the show. Dobrev reportedly made an emotional promise, which Plec wants to see come to life. The showrunner's statement could be a hint to Elena waking up in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 finale.
Moreover, Somerhalder also teased Dobrev's return in an interview with Variety, when asked what he wants to see happen in the end. He said he wants Elena to wake up in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 finale with no memory of the events that happened in Mystic Falls.
