Diamonds are girls' best friend and with precious stones as large as the Foxfire, the friendship will be forever. It was unearthed in Canada and currently, holds the title of being the largest diamond ever mined in North America.
Africa used to produce different colors and sizes of hugely expensive diamonds but this time, it's North America to shine when it mined its largest diamond, the Foxfire. During the previous months, it went on exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, BBC reported.
The precious gem, 187.7-carat Diavik Foxfire was named following the aboriginal characterization of the bright Northern Lights that illuminate the Arctic sky. It was also called "Noiʔeh Kwe" which is a native Tlicho name equivalent to 'caribou crossing stone'. This embodies the legacy of Diavik Foxfire and its connections to the place where it was mined.
The Grand Chief Edward Erasmus mentioned in a press release, "I am very pleased that this has been named to honor the area of the caribou crossing, as this has been important to the Tlicho since time immemorial."
The Diavik mines which are situated in the Slave Province's Precambrian rocks were founded more than 10 years ago and the diamond mining business started in 2003. The Diavik Foxfire was unearthed in a pit underneath the Canada's Northwest Territories lake floor in 2015.
The valuable stone is likely the single gemstone that consists of 99.95 percent carbon. The remaining 0.05 percent is made up of trace elements that distinguish the diamond's crystal constitution or color.
Basically, the gem is a chain of carbon atoms that crystallized to develop a solid and tough diamond stone. The exceptional consolidation of factors including crystal structure, chemical components, and formation process is what award the diamond its astonishing qualities making it priceless.
As reported by BBC, the most valuable stone was displayed at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington for a couple of months. It is considered the largest diamond to be discovered in North America.
The Diavik Foxfire diamond so far is the largest acknowledged quality precious stone ever uncovered in North America. CEO of diamonds and minerals for Rio Tinto, Alan Davies said that the Diavik Foxfire is the sole gem of its size in the whole North American continent.
