‘Harry Potter’ actor Sir John Hurt passes away at 77

"Harry Potter" actor Sir John Hurt has passed away after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015. The actor died on Wednesday at his home in Norfolk.

Despite given surviving cancer, he still struggled with other health problems. Last year, he had to pull out of Sir Kenneth Branagh's production of The Entertainer on the advice of his doctors, BBC reported.

His colleagues were saddened by his passing. On Twitter, J.K. Rowling sent her condolences to his family and friends. Director Guillermo del Torro and Elijah Wood also paid their tributes to the late actor.

He played wandmaker Garrick Olivander in three of the "Harry Potter" installments and has also starred in the 50th anniversary special of "Doctor Who." He is also known for his role in the epic movie series "Lord of the Rings," The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Hurt began acting at the age of eight but did not begin acting professionally until the 1960s. The 77-year-old actor had been in the acting business for six decades with more than 129 films and a dozen television appearances under his belt.

How prominent work includes "A Man for All Seasons," "The Naked Civil Servant," "Midnight Express," "V for Vendetta" and, "The Elephant Man" among others. His work throughout the years has earned him an Oscar Nomination, two Golden Globes and four BAFTAs.

He was knighted in 2015 by Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to Drama. In 2013 he received the Will Award alongside Stacey Keach and Dame Rigg. In 2004, he was also bestowed with the distinction of being a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

He also appears alongside Natalie Portman in the biopic "Jackie" which currently showing in cinemas.
