Richard Kelly recently expressed his interest to make "Donnie Darko 2." The director and writer teased the sequel is going to be bigger and more ambitious.
Kelly talked about the sequel during an interview about the restoration of the original film to Blu-Ray. He commented on the possibility of "Donnie Darko 2" but he also expressed some apprehensions. Kelly said that he wants to make sure first, that he has the budget to make the movie, since he expects it to be "much bigger and more ambitious" than the first film.
"I want to make sure we've got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place," Kelly told HMV.
This is not the first time that rumors about "Donnie Darko 2" surfaced online. Bloody-Disgusting previously reported that Kelly could be part of the sequel. However, that was never confirmed nor denied. Kelly's recent interview is the closest confirmation that he has entertained the idea of creating a sequel to his hit cult sci-fi movie.
Meanwhile, in the same interview Kelly also talked about his other projects. The director promised to bounce back, after being on hiatus from movies for quite some time now. Kelly said he plans to make movies back to back and make up for lost time. He revealed that he is working on some expensive and ambitious projects, which requires a lot of his time.
Kelly told the publication that he will focus on "Donnie Darko 2" as soon as he is done with his prior projects. He wants to release these films first, before he can look back at the original film and come up with a sequel. Apparently, the director wants to give the sequel more thought and time, before he can confirm its release.
