Silverchair, one of the most popular alternative rock bands in the world, is again remembered. This year marks the 20th anniversary of their sophomore album "Freak Show" which practically introduced the band to the world.

Revisiting Freak Show

Alternative rock band Silverchair released their second studio album "Freak Show" January 1997 and the band composed of three teenagers toured endlessly to promote their music. Coupled with their popularity, the album was very successful and somehow became an introductory for those who want to know more about the band.

According to Crypticrock, the sophomore album from Silverchair was pivotal for many reasons. Their initial album, "Frogstomp" was undoubtedly a success but with significant backlash since the group was noticeably trying to copy popular grunge bands at that time. In their second album singer Daniel Johns focused on the backlash and it showed in the lyrics of their album.

One of the most popular songs in the album was "Freak" and it became one of the many songs that pushed Silverchair to worldwide fame. Even the mellow "Cemetery" became popular with significant impact even today.

The Influence of Silverchair

The 20th anniversary of "Freak Show" has brought back memories of the album and even its influence. According to Artist Waves, Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte was inspired to start a band because of Silverchair. While the Madden brothers are in high school, they heard about Silverchair touring and they are nearly the same age.

20 years on, the album is still popular among alternative rock fans. With bold writing by Johns that also follows the grudge line of thought, it has influenced numerous bands from around the world. After the "Freak Show" the band released "Neon Ballroom" that further cements their popularity and legacy as they also offered some experimental sounds with the same grit and power of the band.
