"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams is producing a supernatural World War II movie "Overlord." "Son of A Gun" helmer Julius Avery is directing for Paramount and Bad Robot.
According to Variety, Abrams and Billy Ray came up with the idea for the story of "Overlord" with Ray penning the script. "The Revenant" scribe Mark L. Smith has done a slight polish on the final draft with Abrams producing for Bad Robot.
"Overlord" follows the story of two paratroopers who are on a mission to destroy a German Radio Tower in a small town outside of Normandy during D-Day, IGN reported. The pair finds themselves caught behind enemy lines when their planes crash but still manage to reach their target.
In the plot of "Overlord," the two paratroopers were on a mission to take out a German radio tower just outside of Normandy. However, they quickly realize that they not only have to fight off Nazi soldiers but also must battle supernatural forces, which are the result of strange Nazi experiments.
Paramount Pictures first acquired the project "Overlord" in 2007, which has since gained steam following Avery's attachment. Executive producers have already begun meeting with talent to play the two soldiers.
Prior to his breakout film "Son of a Gun," Avery was best known for his short films that eventually landed him the job on the A24 thriller. The film's critical success caught the eye of Ridley Scott, who tapped him to direct the drug trafficker movie "The King of L.A."
Abrams recently gave his take on a specific scene in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and explained why Kylo Ren and Rey had never met before the events of the film. He is also working with Valve on "Half-Life" and "Portal" movies, while he is making a game with "Infinity Blade" developer Chair Entertainment.
For now, "Overlord" does not have a release date and no word yet on who might be playing the two leads.
