Matthew McConaughey's new movie "Gold" once showed a lot of potentials after he won Best Actor for his movie "Dallas Buyers Club" at last year's Oscar Award. However, critics weren't impressed that some called it dull and his acting being over-the-top.
In an article published by The Telegraph, they said that the movie was inspired by the 90s financial struggle of a man who inherited his father's mining company. It was his wish from the very beginning to take over it but then he found himself struggling in handling it. Apparently, it was a family business that is swarming in debt.
His character, Kenny Wells, didn't have many options to maintain the business, so what he did is run it from his girlfriend's workplace, which is a local bar. In the middle of the story, still thinking that he could turn the whole situation around, he decided to pawn his woman's watch and take all his savings just to venture in Indonesia.
He then found gold in the end, but his performance was not of the same element that critics thought it was. The Guardian thought he was "insufferable hammy." There were scenes where he could have acted normal or a little bit less, but his performance was a bit theatrical for the film's standard.
The AV Club didn't go easy on the actor as well with their review saying it was not exactly enlightening. If anything, it was dizzying. McConaughey's image was completely altered from his balding hair to a make-up that made him look old. He also has a huge belly in this film.
The New York Times thought that it lacks inspiration despite its theme that is supposed to be inspirational. "Gold" is still in theaters today.
