"Fresh Off the Boat" actress Constance Wu has joined the cast of an independent drama titled "You and Me Both." Wu, who has been recognized for her character in ABC's comedy series, will now be portraying a darker role. Read on for more details.

According to Variety, Wu starrer "You and Me Both" is writer-director Jennifer Cho Suhr's debut film that explores the themes of "grief, forgiveness and belonging." The movie revolves around a story of siblings in search of their biological mother.

The film reportedly aims at "showcasing the breadth and range of the Asian American experience with complicated and deeply human characters." According to the report, the 33-year-old Taiwanese-American actress will be playing the role of one of the siblings, who is an addict. Wu's character and her estranged sister together start a journey in search of their biological mother. They travel from Iowa to Alaska as they look for their mother.

Wu is known for portraying the critically acclaimed role of Jessica Huang in ABC's "Fresh Off the Boat." For her work in the comedy series, the actress has been nominated for the TCA and Critics' Choice Television awards. In the past, the actress has also appeared in movies like "Year of the Fish" and "The Architect." As for television, she appeared in the recurring role of Laudine Lee in soap opera "One Life to Live."

Produced by Carolyn Mao and Mollye Asher, "You and Me Both" is said to be a female-led dramatic feature. Meanwhile, the movie is supported by Tribeca All Access, NALIP and Film Independent.

Wu once spoke about her dream role and how she would like to promote Asian-American stories. "I have dream roles in theater, like Masha in 'Three Sisters.' I do come from a dramatic background, so I'd like to continue doing drama," Wu told The New York Times Magazine. "And I'd like to promote Asian-American stories, where the Asians carry the story and where being Asian-American is not the only part of their identity, but it's a beautiful part of their identity that we want to show," the actress continued.

Wu's "You and Me Both" is still in its pre-production stage. It is expected to begin its principal photography in the summer. Check out a promo from Wu's "Fresh Off the Boat," below.
