Another legal drama franchise is getting expanded. "Suits," starring Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams, has been reported to get its own spinoff series on USA Network.
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, a "Suits" spinoff is in the works centering on Gina Torres' character, Jessica Pearson. Produced by Universal Cable Productions, sources claim that the new project is still in early talks of development, with no deals officially in place.
"Suits" fans will remember that Jessica exited the firm in the first half of season 6. It was reported back then that Torres' reason for her departure was due to the show's filming location in Toronto. The actress decided to leave the show for good so she can return in Los Angeles, where she's based.
Following the news, no other developments have arrived. Producers and Torres herself are staying silent about the spinoff rumor. According to TV Line, a spokesperson for the studio did not confirm nor deny the early reports but has offered a statement saying: "The Suits team is currently focused on the remaining episodes of Season 6 and what's next for the characters when they return in Season 7."
As for the original series, the show was recently renewed for Season 7. The first half of season 6 delve heavily on Mike's prison storyline after he made a deal with the prosecutor for his charges of conspiracy to commit fraud.
The second half of season 6 is still dealing with the aftermath of Jessica's departure with Harvey and Louis struggling to keep the firm up and running. As for Mike, the character has greatly evolved following his prison stint. But it remains to be seen whether he can still pursue his dream of becoming an actual licensed lawyer.
"Suits" is not the only legal drama that has gotten a spinoff. CBS has recently launched "The Good Fight," which is based on the characters of the highly-acclaimed series, The Good Wife starring Julianna Marguilles.
For the many fans who have missed the presence of Jessica Pearson running New York's top law firm, it is expected that new information will arrive about the spinoff in the coming weeks. So they better keep an eye out for that.
