"The Angry Birds Movie," the adaptation of Rovio Entertainment's popular video game,  has successfully clinched the top spot in China's box office after it opened over the weekend.

According to the South China Morning Post, the adventure-filled 3D CGI-animated action-comedy film raked in a total of 195.3 million yuan in ticket sales (HK$32 million) in China from Friday until Sunday.

With this figure, according to Entgroup's data, Columbia Pictures' and Rovio Animation's "The Angry Birds Movie" outperformed "Captain America: Civil War's" opening last weekend in China, making it slip to the no. 2 spot.

Apart from the Chris Evans movie, the inhabitants of the Bird Island were also victorious in beating another animated movie, "Zootopia." It is not known yet, though, if the birds would be successful as well in dethroning the animals of "Zootopia" as the second top-grossing film in the Chinese box office this year.

In the meantime, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that despite the remarkable performance of "The Angry Birds Movie" during its debut in the Chinese mainland, it failed to oust two other animated films as the highest-grosser on a weekend opening.

Based on the data gathered by the entertainment site, the ticket sales of "The Angry Birds Movie" in China's box office over the weekend only came in third to Kung Fu Panda 3 ($51.3 million) and Stand by Me Doraemon ($38.4 million).

While the bird-dominated project defeated "Captain America: Civil War" in weekend sales, particularly with the figure it recorded on its third week since its May 6 premiere, it is worth noting that the Russo brothers-directed superhero film has already reached the $1 billion mark, making it the 10th billion-dollar film from Disney.
