Shemar Moore has landed his next TV role. The Criminal Minds actor will star as the lead character on the "S.W.A.T" reboot co-produced by CBS and Sony Pictures TV.
Based on the 2003 movie of the same name, "S.W.A.T." is described as a procedural that follows a locally born and bred S.W.A.T. lieutenant torn between loyalty to the streets and duty to his fellow officers when he's tasked to run a highly trained unit that is the last stop for solving crimes in Los Angeles.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Moore will take on the role of Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson in the new project. Previously portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in the feature film, Moore's character "exudes calmness but is always ready for action," the site reveals.
Moore will also serve as a producer for the show. He will star alongside Stephanie Sigman, Lina Esco, and Kenny Johnson.
"S.W.A.T" marks as Moore's reunion project with CBS after exiting "Criminal Minds" last year. Moore was known for his portrayal on the crime procedural as the tough but sweet BAU agent, Derek Morgan. At that time, Moore explained that he decided to leave so he can explore other options as an actor.
"I'm just ready to grow. I just want to leap. And I don't know where I'm going to land, but I believe that I'm going to land," the actor told TV Guide.
"I'm not leaving to go be a big star. I'm not leaving to go make a bunch of money. ... I'm leaving because I just creatively want to be fueled and [am] excited to try new things and see what else I'm capable of."
Moore's new project joins other pilots headed to CBS this year including "The Get," "Instinct," "Mission Control" and "Perfect Citizen" among others.
