Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass easily snatched the top spot on China's box office, amassing $27.1 million over the weekend.
Among Walt Disney titles released in China, Alice 2 managed to secure the second spot, just behind last year's The Jungle Book. It also outpaced last weekend's top-grossing film The Angry Birds Movie, which now slipped to second.
Alice 2 collected over twofold of the ticket sales that Alice in Wonderland bagged during its debut six years ago in China. On its opening weekend in March 2010, Alice in Wonderland generated only $10.8 million.
Meanwhile, things are a bit gloomy for Alice 2 outside the mainland. While Alice in Wonderland managed to rake in a staggering $1 billion worldwide, Alice 2 flopped with only $28.1 million over the Memorial Day holiday in the US.
The film has a lot of catching up to do to at least breakeven its $170 million production budget. However, it will attempt to staunch the losses overseas where the movie reportedly bagged $65 million from 72 percent of marketplaces, including major locations like Australia, Brazil, Italy, Russia, and the United Kingdom.
The movie is also set to open in other international markets such as France, Japan, and South Korea on June 1, July 1, and September 8, respectively.
In the United States, X-Men: Apocalypse clearly won the Memorial Day square off. According to Jeff Bock, an analyst from Exhibitor Relations, "That's what happens when a spring fling attempts to go full-tilt summer blockbuster. We've seen this happen in the past and it usually doesn't work out."
The fantasy-adventure film features Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. The cast also includes Anne Hathaway as Mirana, Helena Bonham Carter as Iracebeth, and Sacha Baron Cohen as the Time Keeper.
